Recently, the Florida Mayhem hosted the inaugural Mayhem Collegiate Rumble, presented by Frontier Communications. The Rumble pitted eight of Florida’s top collegiate Overwatch squads against one another in a single-elimination bracket for a share of $5000 in cash prizing.
“Today was the most fun I’ve had playing competitive Overwatch in a WHILE,” one competitor from Florida State wrote. “Thank you @FLMayhem for putting on a fantastic tournament to send my senior year of esports, had an absolute blast with my @EsportsAtFSU squad.”
Florida State certainly had a blast, but it was UCF Esports that walked away with the $2,000 grand prize after a perfect bracket run, with Full Sail Armada, the University of Florida, and Florida State University rounded out the Top 4.
“The Mayhem Collegiate Rumble was our chance to highlight Florida’s up-and-coming collegiate Overwatch talent, with a high-quality production and impactful prize pool to raise the stakes,” says Mayhem Social Media Manager Brandon “thibbledork” Padilla. “Some of these players are making major waves in the Tier 3 scene here in North America, and they’re doing so while also pursuing one or more degrees at some of Florida’s top universities. We at the Mayhem feel that it’s our duty as an Overwatch League franchise to give these players – and the Florida Collegiate community as a whole – the chance to make a name for themselves, while also showing the world who these players really are and why they deserve some attention from Overwatch fans across the globe.”
Hundreds of Overwatch fans flocked to the two streams broadcasting the action last Wednesday. Production was arranged by Elo Hell Esports, a premier esports broadcasting agency founded by Team Envy content creator Justin “Jayne” Conroy.
While there are no details regarding a repeat performance of the Rumble, the Mayhem are slated to host the next tournament in their Mayhem Classic Series, the Mayhem Summer Brawl, sometime before the second season of North American Contenders gets underway. The Mayhem Winter Classic was hosted in January and featured 16 teams from a variety of tiers and regions of play in a 2-day, double elimination slugfest, with $7,500 in cash prizing on the line.
